I think its all in the way you phrase it. I tried it and it paid off


You also have to be ready for them to call your bluff (if you are indeed bluffing and do not want to go to the other company)

But I phrased it as "I want to stay, but I have another competitive offer that I would leave for unless my demands of X, Y and Z are met."

The offering company won't ever know the wiser and if you are respected enough, you current employer should pony up. You just have to be prepared to actually leave if they don't go along
